San Antonio will no longer accept plastic bags for recycling

Many stores, including San Antonio-based grocer H-E-B, are still using plastic grocery bags, but the Alamo City is saying “No” to the single-use bags as they are causing more problems for our recycling process. Single-use plastic bags will soon be banned from being placed in the blue recycling bins, according to a news release.

San Antonio Solid Waste Management Department (SWMD) said Thursday the ban on the bags will begin on August 1, even if the bags are bundled. The bags can become entangled with other recyclable materials, making them non-recyclable, the news release says. The bags have also been known to stick to the recycling sorting machines causing malfunctions.

“Of the nation’s 10 other largest cities, none of them are accepting plastic bags in the blue cart. San Antonio kept them in its program for several years, but operationally it hasn’t worked,” SWMD Deputy Director Josephine Valencia said in the news release. “The change affects our 370,000 customers, but it is important to note that the city’s private hauling companies that collect from the remaining 2,081,000 population and commercial businesses have never accepted plastic bags in their recycling programs.”

Here are some alternative methods for disposing of the plastic bags recommended by SWMD:
