Gloria Schilling’s dedication to serving others has made a lasting impact. On Monday, she was honored with a special event featuring an unexpected guest!
SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio woman who has spent years giving back to her community received a heartfelt surprise from her favorite team.
Gloria Schilling, a longtime volunteer now in hospice care with Stage 4 cancer, was honored by her senior ministry at St. Luke’s Parish Hall on Monday with a special event — and an unexpected guest!
Schilling, who has volunteered for over 15 years organizing toy drives, delivering blankets to cancer patients and assisting with outreach programs, thought she was attending a regular Lotería game.
Instead, her community had planned a special tribute, bringing in the San Antonio Spurs’ beloved mascot, the Coyote, to celebrate her.
“So today is a very special day. We’re super excited because we are honoring one of our longtime volunteers,” said Vivian Cantu, Senior Adult Ministry Coordinator. “Unfortunately, this longtime volunteer has been diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer and has been put on hospice.”
Schilling’s dedication to serving others has made a lasting impact. From helping the homeless to supporting children in need, she has been a constant presence in local charity work.
“Today is a very special occasion because we’re honoring one of our volunteers,” said a senior ministry member. “Her name is Gloria Schilling. She has volunteered for so many activities for the homeless, for the poor.”
The highlight of the day came when the Spurs Coyote made a surprise entrance, delighting Schilling, who was recently named the Spurs Superfan of the Game.
“Nobody knows that we’re going to have the famous Spurs Coyote. So it’s going to be a super surprise for her!” one organizer shared before the reveal.
The moment was filled with joy and emotion, as friends, family and fellow volunteers cheered for Schilling.
“The Spurs are her favorite, and she is an incredible person,” said Analisa Esquivel, a Catholic Charities volunteer. “She has dedicated her life to serving others. So we’re here to celebrate you, Gloria.”
For a woman who has spent years lifting others up, this celebration was a way for the community to return the kindness. Schilling’s impact on San Antonio is undeniable and on this day, she was the one receiving the love she has always given.
