A San Antonio woman raises concerns about her spouse facing faulty air conditioning at Bexar County Jail for two months.
SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio woman is concerned about her spouse in the Bexar County Jail.
She says her partner has been without A/C on and off for two months.
She worries this issue will continue, and doesn’t know what will happen as temperatures heat up.
She says he has to sleep on the floor in his cell to access any kind of cool air. Her identity will not be shared as we hear her concerns.
“I mean, I can only imagine how they must feel to sit there and have to deal with that all day long…feeling like they’re in a sauna and can’t breathe – it’s not proper.”
This woman said every time she gets on the phone with her spouse over the last two months or so, there’s something wrong with the air conditioner on the second floor of the jail.
“And they do go check it for about a week, they have fixed it…barely blowing…now it’s not blowing at all again.”
Bexar County facilities, who helps maintain the jail, had this to say:
Temperatures within the jail are being monitored and are in compliance with the standards set by the Texas Commission on Jail Standards.
There have been recent issues with one of the air conditioning units at the Adult Detention Facility. The unit has been evaluated and was found to be operational but in need of replacement. That replacement unit has been ordered and is expected to arrive early next week.
The County Facilities Department, together with the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, continues to monitor the jail.
We reached out to the sheriff’s office which stated:
The Texas Commission on Jail Standards mandates that air temperature in jails be between 65 and 85 degrees.
Bexar County facilities and BCSO strive to comply with these minimum standards – we recognize that compliance does not always ensure optimal comfort for all inmates.
“For this to be going on for a whole two-month period, it doesn’t seem like there’s much being done to get this done.”
