SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio woman and ultra-marathoner is on a mission to Uvalde.
Paloma Gonzalez will be running from her home near 1604 and Marbach Road, all the way to the Uvalde Town Square, which is about 70 miles. Gonzalez is making this journey in honor of the victims of the Uvalde tragedy.
“I’m running in honor of the 21 victims of the Uvalde shooting, and I want to keep their memory alive. I am planning on running from my house to their home in Uvalde which I’m calculating is about 70 miles,” said Gonzalez.
Apart from being a runner, Gonzalez is a nurse at a San Antonio Children’s Hospital. Gonzalez says when the tragedy unfolded, she was at work and thought about her daughter Natalie who was the same age as some of the victims. She also thought about the parents who were also at work and never were able to see their children alive again.
“It really hit way too close to home for me,” said Gonzalez.
Paloma plans on making the 70 mile journey beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday from 1604 and Marbach Road, all the way back to Uvalde. She won’t be alone, she’ll have a team supporting her along the way.
“They’re going to be behind me in a vehicle, and so that way they’ll ensure my safety,” said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez also wants to make a difference for a student’s education, so she created a GoFundMe with all the proceeds benefiting a scholarship. She selected Caden Smith, who is on the football field this year and wore jersey number 21.
As Gonzalez makes her 70 mile journey to Uvalde, every step is for the victims and their families.
“We are with them. We may not know exactly how they’re feeling, but they do have our support,” said Gonzalez.
