San Antonio Zoo announces opening date for new gorilla habitat Congo Falls

The opening marks a major milestone in the zoo’s 111-year history, according to SA Zoo officials.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Zoo has announced that Congo Falls, its long-awaited gorilla habitat, will open to the public on December 13—marking the return of gorillas to the city for the first time in more than 30 years.

The zoo says Congo Falls is a two-acre habitat designed to set “a new standard” for wildlife conservation, education and animal care. The opening marks a major milestone in the zoo’s 111-year history, according to zoo officials.

The new exhibit will house eight western lowland gorillas: a bachelor troop of four males and a family group made up of one silverback and three females, the zoo teased over the summer. The animals will live among landscaped areas, a 30-foot waterfall, a pool for water play, a 70-foot gorilla tower and lots of space meant to encourage exploration, education and interaction.

Zoo officials have said the design provides 360-degree views for guests and includes elevated walkways for both visitors and gorillas. Staff members told KENS 5 earlier this year that the unique design will give visitors an immersive experience and a rare opportunity to get right into the gorilla’s own world.

To celebrate the grand opening, the zoo said it will host a 15-minute drone show featuring 350 illuminated drones. The one-night-only event is free for zoo members but open to all visitors.
