San Antonio Zoo hosts Earth Day event to inspire sustainable practices among families.
SAN ANTONIO — Families, performers and local organizations gathered at the San Antonio Zoo this weekend to take part in a vibrant celebration focused on the planet—and how to protect it. The event, held in honor of Earth Day, blended fun and education to help inspire a more sustainable future for the community and beyond.
Organizers say the goal goes far beyond one day of celebration.
“Our focus is to teach families and children how they can provide, whether that’s recycling, whether that’s less plastic consumption… just so we can enjoy our Earth a little bit longer,” said Solange Gonzalez, Director of Consumer Events at the San Antonio Zoo.
Throughout the zoo, children took part in educational activities, met their favorite animals and learned about how small daily choices can have a lasting impact.
“We have some entertainment just to kind of hang out with the kids and tell them all about Earth Day… you’re also protecting your friends and the animals that live on the Earth,” said Cassandra Flores, a performer at the zoo.
The zoo also hosted a variety of hands-on learning stations and welcomed local nonprofits who share a mission of conservation. One of those organizations, the San Antonio River Foundation, brought interactive exhibits and encouraged guests to think bigger about their role in environmental protection.
“Our mission is to steward the entire San Antonio River basin… all 240 miles of the river,” said Sarah Ramirez, Director of Nature Equity for the San Antonio River Foundation.
The message woven through every activity was clear: it’s never too early, or too late, to care for the environment.
“We have education stations, we have community partners… so we can enjoy our Earth a little bit longer,” Gonzalez added.
Whether it was feeding giraffes, learning about composting or just soaking in the sunshine, families walked away with more than memories and left with tools to make a difference.
“For protecting the Earth, you’re also protecting your friends and the animals that live on the Earth,” Flores said. “Come out to the San Antonio Zoo… bring your friends. Bring your family.”
