SAN ANTONIO — A new adorable addition was announced at San Antonio Zoo this weekend.
San Antonio Zoo unveiled its newest mascot, Savanna the Giraffe, whose mission is to help the zoo secure a future for wildlife.
“Savanna is more than just a fun addition to the zoo; she represents San Antonio Zoo’s deep commitment to giraffe conservation. Giraffe populations are in crisis worldwide, with habitats shrinking by nearly 90% over the past 300 years and local extinctions already occurring in several African countries,” according to a press release from the zoo.
“Today, there is one giraffe for every four elephants in Africa, highlighting the critical need for action. San Antonio Zoo is working to reverse that trend. Every giraffe feeding, Conserfari Tour, and overnight stay at Spekboom Lodge supports the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, the only global organization dedicated exclusively to protecting giraffes in the wild.”
Zoo organizers say they hope Savanna the Giraffe, will help spark conversations, actions and reminds the community about why securing a future for wildlife is vitally important.
The announcement came Saturday on the zoo’s Great Lawn and featured many of the city’s most beloved mascots including the San Antonio Zoo’s Cowboy, H-E-Buddy, UTSA’s Rowdy the Roadrunner, Tori the Tower, Whataburger’s Whataguy, and many others.
The mascots also participated in a mascot parade while guests later enjoyed live music, photo ops and giveaways – where one person won a one-night stay at the zoo’s Spekboom Lodge – which supports the Giraffe Conservation Foundation.
