San Antonio’s best school bus drivers to face off in ‘Big Yellow’ obstacle course for coveted trophy buckle

The event challenges drivers to maneuver a full-size school bus through a series of obstacle courses designed to simulate real-world conditions they encounter daily.

SAN ANTONIO — School bus drivers from across the region will put their precision driving skills to the test Saturday during the Central Texas Regional School Bus Safety Road-e-o at Northside Independent School District’s McClung Transportation Station.

The competition is scheduled for 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 7, at the transportation facility located at 14173 Old FM 471 W.

The event challenges drivers to maneuver a full-size school bus through a series of obstacle courses designed to simulate real-world conditions they encounter on daily routes. Participants will navigate tight turns, controlled stops and other driving scenarios that emphasize safety and accuracy.

Organizers describe the Road-e-o as similar in spirit to a children’s bike rodeo, but conducted with a 40-foot school bus weighing roughly 15 tons and carrying the responsibility of student safety.

Drivers will compete for several honors, including the title of the region’s top school bus driver. First-place winners will also receive trophy buckles, a nod to a long-standing Texas tradition recognizing top competitors.

In addition to the buckles, participants are competing for recognition among their peers and the chance to advance toward state-level honors in school bus safety competitions.

The event highlights the skill required of professional school bus drivers and the safety standards used by school districts throughout Central Texas.
