San Antonio’s first free blockbuster brings retro flair to movie sharing

San Antonio welcomes its first free blockbuster, allowing visitors to swap movies at My Weekend World Events Center.

SAN ANTONIO — A blast from the past is getting San Antonians to hit rewind. Remember blockbuster? It’s back, but with a twist.

The city’s first free blockbuster is now open at My Weekend World Events Center on McCarty Road near San Pedro and Loop 410.

The concept is simple: take a movie, leave a movie. Anyone can stop by, borrow a DVD or VHS, then drop off one for someone else to enjoy.

“It’s just an awesome opportunity to relive that nostalgia and the community has really come together about it. And that’s great for us because we’re just trying to build a network and draw attention to this community center we’re building here,” Owner Michael Strickland said.

The free blockbuster is part of a bigger small-business hub that also features a retro ’90s toy store, recording studio and vendor village. They hope to soon set a Guinness World Record for the world’s smallest movie theater right downstairs.
