Johnson will join Gregg Popovich as the only head coaches in Spurs history to roam the sidelines of the All-Star Game.
SAN ANTONIO — It is official: Following San Antonio’s Sunday win over the Magic and the Nuggets’ loss to the Thunder just minutes later, Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson has been named a head coach for the 2026 NBA All-Star Game.
Johnson, in the midst of his first full season as head coach, and his staff will coach one of the three All-Star teams in the new U.S. vs. World format, the NBA announced.
Johnson won the spot based on the Spurs securing the best record in the Western Conference through Feb. 1 among teams eligible for All-Star coaching selection. Thunder head coach Mark Daigneault and his staff were ineligible after coaching in the 2025 NBA All-Star Game.
Just one other Spurs head coach has won coaching duties for the All-Star Game: Hall of Famer Gregg Popovich, who did it four times, most recently in 2016.
Following the Spurs’ win over the Magic, Johnson said it would be an “honor” to be an All-Star coach, adding he’s looking forward to making great memories during the weekend in Los Angeles.
