San Antonio attorney and owner of high-end downtown apartments has sold the Phipps Building, which is also home to the popular rooftop bar and drag brunch spot Paramour. Bexar County records show the building was sold to a Dallas-area company called CDC Enterprises LP, which is linked to Dallas businessman Daren Connel, the San Antonio Business Journal reports.
The details of the sale were not disclosed but CDC Enterprises took out a loan from First National Bank & Trust Co. for $8.25 million. The attorney who owned the building, Martin Phipps, reportedly notified its lender Frost Bank that it would default on the $7.3 million mortgage in August. County records show a forbearance agreement between Phipps and Frost Bank for the amount over $8 million.

It’s unclear what this means for the popular rooftop bar Paramour, also owned by Phipps. It has a New Year’s Eve celebration planned with popular local drag queen Kristi Waters on Saturday, December 31. MySA reached out to Paramour for comment.
Phipps was a prominent attorney who was in the news in February 2021 when he was arrested in connection with telephone harassment against his then wife at the time. The arrest came after his former partner, T.J. Mayes, resigned. Mayes and other attorneys gave a letter to Phipps alleging fraud and claims that he “psychologically abused” his wife who was a legal assistant at Phipps’ firm.
The charges were eventually dropped.
