San Felipe Del Rio CISD says unauthorized person gained access to elementary school early Wednesday

A concerned citizen called 911 to report the unauthorized entry to police, who found them and detained them.

DEL RIO, Texas — A school district in southwest Texas says an unauthorized person gained access to an elementary school early Wednesday.

San Felipe Del Rio CISD says that at around 5:30 a.m., a concerned citizen called 911 to report the unauthorized entry to police.

The unidentified suspect was able to scale a fence, then gain entry to Lamar Elementary School through an unsecured door in the school’s cafeteria.

The City of Del Rio Police, together with San Felipe Del Rio CISD Police, quickly responded to the call and were able to find and detain the suspect.

“It is unclear if the individual was fleeing from someone or seeking medical attention,” said a statement released by SFDRCISD.

Officials will continue the investigation to determine what happened and how the suspect was able to get onto school grounds.

“It is important to note that students were not on campus at the time of the event,” said the district. “School district officials have conducted a thorough review of video surveillance footage and have determined necessary improvements to our building and perimeter security.”

The district also expressed appreciation for the concerned citizen who reported the unauthorized access.

“We are also indebted to our local law enforcement agencies who continue to place the wellbeing of our students as a top priority,” said SFDRCISD.
