San Marcos community members hold event for man killed by police in 2024

Malachi Williams was shot and killed by San Marcos police officers in April 2024 after officers got a 911 call of a man threatening two other men with a knife.

AUSTIN, Texas — On Saturday, community members in San Marcos held an event for Malachi Williams, a 22-year-old man who was killed by a San Marcos police officer last April.

The shooting happened on April 11, 2024 in the parking lot of the H-E-B grocery story at 641 E. Hopkins St. in San Marcos, after Williams allegedly threatened two men outside a convenience store while he was holding two knives.

When officers found Williams, they asked him to step outside. During the encounter, Williams reportedly ignored the officer’s commands to turn around and put his hands behind his back. He then turned and ran from the store.

Williams was pursued by multiple officers. Officer Alcides “Alex” Ventura used his Taser twice while running but both attempts missed.

After running to the northwest along Hopkins Street, Williams cut through a parking lot and headed directly toward the H-E-B, which was open at the time. After they entered the parking lot of the grocery store, Ventura shot Williams, striking him twice. Despite attempts at life-saving measures, he did not survive.

In August 2024, a Hays County grand jury cleared Ventura, ruling that his actions as an officer were justified under Texas law.

At Saturday’s event, community members came together to participate in activities and share memories of Williams.

Williams suffered from mental health issues and was unhoused at the time of his death, and the event was designed to spread awareness of Williams’ case and help give back to the community.

“He would support the community. He would give the shirt off his back,” Williams’ mother Shanta Miller said. “So we’re continuing his stand for justice for all. We’re continuing his stand to give back to the community.”
