San Marcos mourns high school football player state officials say was fatally shot at graduation party

Texas lawmakers honored the teen with moment of silence at the Texas Capitol on Sunday.

SAN MARCOS, Texas — The San Marcos community is grieving the tragic loss of a San Marcos High School football player who state leaders said was shot and killed at a high school graduation party early Sunday morning.

On the floor of the Texas house, Rep. Erin Zwiener, who represents parts of Hays County, identified the teen as Andrew Farias.

Zwiener said the graduation party was held by graduating San Marcos seniors, and an unknown person fired a weapon.

Zwiener addressed the chamber to pay tribute to Farias, and lawmakers observed a moment of silence to honor his memory.

“Andrew was part of a tight knit family. He was a mentor to his younger siblings and his younger cousins,” Zwiener said. “He played for the San Marcos high school Rattlers football team and he was scheduled to start at Texas State University in August where he hoped to pursue a degree in construction engineering.”

The San Marcos Rattler Football Facebook page shared a heartfelt post with a photo of Farias in uniform, stating, “In loving memory of Andrew Farias. Forever part of our team. The game may end, but legends live on.”

Family members told KVUE a GoFundMe campaign was launched to help with funeral expenses.
