San Pedro Creek Culture Park fully opens as final phase of the project wraps up

San Antonio celebrates the completion of the San Pedro Creek Culture Park, a flood-mitigating project with art and trails.

SAN ANTONIO — After years in the making, the San Pedro Creek Culture Park project is complete and fully open to the public.

The San Antonio River Authority unveiled the phase this week with a celebration and public dedication event.

The project includes over two miles of trails through downtown San Antonio, 11 acres of landscaping and numerous pieces of public art.

Once described as the “New River Walk,” the project deepened and widened the existing San Pedro channel, and replaced eight street bridges to create a beautiful, walkable new park. The development is also meant to mitigate flood issues in the downtown area.

The project included four phases, with the first segment being unveiled in May of 2018. Phase 1 included a stretch from North Santa Rosa Stree to Houston Street.

Phase 1’s final two segments were completed in October of 2022.

Phases 4.1 and 4.2 which runs from El Paso Street and Alamo Street opened in the Fall of 2023. Phase 3 includes Alamo Street to the confluence with Apache Creek. That phase just wrapped up, bring the massive project to a close. The city says a trail connection above the creek, between Cesar E. Chavez Blvd and El Paso Street, remains a possibility for future development.
