Police say a driver of a small sedan died after crashing into a NEISD school bus on the northeast side.
SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Police Department says a person has died after a crash involving a North East ISD school bus on the northeast side.
Around 5 p.m., SAPD responded to the 2400 block of Northeast Loop 410 after receiving reports of a two-vehicle crash.
Police said the crash involved a small sedan and a NEISD school bus.
Upon arrival, officials found no one injured on the bus but the driver of the small sedan was found dead on the scene. The victim has been identified by the Bexar County Medical Examiner as William Christopher Tutt, 54.
Director of Communications for North East ISD Aubrey Chancellor says the bus was stopped and had it’s red flashing lights and crossarm down.
“The accident is simply awful, anytime you have a situation like this,” she said. “We feel for all of the family of the driver of that vehicle.”
One parent shared dash camera video of the collision with KENS 5. It shows the bus was stopped at a drop off location on the access road when it happened.
The parent is hoping the district will move the bus stop location considering the amount of speeding drivers.
“It’s dangerous, it’s scary. I mean I tend to want to when I can between work, usually pick up the kid and drop him off,” she said. “On days I can’t, he does ride that school bus.”
Chancellor says there will be no changes to the bus stop at this time.
“Right now, our priority is the bus driver and the student who was on the bus and making sure that student is cared for and gets any counseling that the individual might need.”
From there, Chancellor says, they’ll be looking at the bus stop location – right on an access road – and see if that needs to be changed. She noted its been one for 17 years without incident.
“We have hundreds and hundreds of bus stops throughout our district and it’s something that we look at.“
A spokesperson with NEISD released this statement regarding the bus stop location:
Student safety is our top priority and we routinely review our bus stop locations. If we receive a parent or community concern, we see if there is anything we can improve upon or if there are other alternatives.
