SAPD: 1 dead after OfferUp transaction results in gunfire on the northwest side

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police are investigating a deadly shootout on the Northwest side that they suspect began with an online sale meetup.

At around 2:50 p.m. Wednesday, officials responded to two locations in the 1700 block of Babcock Road and 1500 block of Mardell Street, for reports of gunfire in the area. SAPD said they received calls from people reporting they heard around 12 to 15 shots ring out on Mardell Street.

At this point, authorities said the interaction started as a meetup for an OfferUp transaction before “something happened and they both started shooting at each other.” A woman who was with victim drove him away from the area before he died from his injuries; authorities believe he was about 28 years old.

It’s unclear at this point, however, if the person who died started the violence or if there’s another suspect who left the area.

One woman who lives a few doors down from where the shooting took place spoke to KENS 5 anonymously. She said she was at work when it happened but rushed home once she heard about the shooting.

She said, “We were very nervous and scared because we don’t know what’s happening.”

She added, an officer had told her to be on the lookout for weapons that may have been tossed. Hours later, our cameras captured the moment they discovered a gun wrapped in a red cloth in their backyard.

Crime scene investigators took it in as evidence.

As of Wednesday night, no one has been charged. However, police were questioning at least two people.
