SAPD: 2 dead, including 12-year-old after suspected street racing ends in major wreck on west side

A suspected street race ended tragically as a 12-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man were killed in a crash on Tuesday, police said.

SAN ANTONIO — A 12-year-old boy and a 20-year-old man are dead following a major crash on the city’s near inner west side that investigators say may have involved street racing, according to the San Antonio Police Department.

Police responded around 6:36 p.m. Tuesday to the 1200 block of Culebra Road after receiving multiple calls about a two-vehicle collision.

Investigators said witnesses reported seeing vehicles racing in the area, including a sedan and a truck. According to police, the driver of the sedan, identified as Raul Gallegos, was traveling westbound on Culebra when he lost control, spun into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle.

Inside the sedan were Gallegos and a 12-year-old passenger, identified as Jonathan Rivera.

Police said Rivera was pronounced dead at the scene. Gallegos was transported to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 66-year-old woman, was taken to a hospital for treatment, according to police.

Investigators said the second vehicle believed to be involved in the racing, a truck, left the scene before officers arrived. That driver has not been identified.

The crash remains under investigation.
