SAPD: 2 injured in shooting possibly connected to human smuggling operation

A call for a shooting in San Antonio led to the discovery of migrants in a vehicle, according to a preliminary report from the San Antonio Police Department.

At about 1:45 a.m. on Sunday, June 16, San Antonio police responded to the shooting call coming from the 900 block of South Walters Street. When they arrived, they found a man, 24, with a graze on his head from a gunshot.

SAPD said they were told that unknown people drove up to the location and began shooting toward the man, then fled the scene. As officers continued to investigate the scene, they found a second person, 17, inside a pickup truck nearby who had also been shot. He was sitting in the vehicle with four other people, officials said.

The 17-year-old was also grazed by a bullet and had minor injuries, SAPD said. All five of the people in the pickup truck, all men, were found to be migrants, officials added. “Homeland Security was notified of the human smuggling case,” SAPD said in the report. “The suspect in the human smuggling case fled the scene prior to PD arrival.”

Both of the people who were grazed by gunshots were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. “The migrants were transported to the Migrant Resource Center for assistance,” SAPD said in the report. “Both of these investigations remain ongoing.” The shooters have not yet been located.
