SAPD: Accidental shooting at southeast-side apartment leads to arrest over explosive device possession

The victims initially told police there was an altercation with another man. It was later determined that one of the victims had accidentally shot, striking the two.

SAN ANTONIO — Two people were taken to the hospital after a shooting at a southeast-side apartment Thursday night, police say.

SAPD was called to the Spanish Crest Apartments located at 462 Utopia Lane around 10:30 p.m. When there they found an 18-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman both with gunshot wounds to their legs.

The victims initially told police there was an “altercation” with another man at their apartment. They said that man had fled before police got there.

Both victims were taken to the hospital in stable condition.

It was later determined that the 18-year-old had “handled the firearm incorrectly” and shot a shot, striking his leg and also hitting the woman in her legs.

While on-scene, SAPD found a suspicious object in plain view in a different room in the apartment. The officer believed that the object was possibly explosive.

The occupants of a nearby unit were then evacuated as the Bomb Squad made the scene. They confirmed that the object had explosive components and took it.

No injuries or property damage was caused by this device.

A 20-year-old man is also a resident in the apartment and was allegedly a witness of the shooting. Police say he gave “false information” and was arrested for false report to a PO. He also told police he owned the explosive object and is being listed as a suspect for components of explosives.

Detectives are currently investigating.

This is a developing situation and KENS 5 will continue to update this article as we learn more.
