SAPD: Armed suspects barricade inside west-side home after string of car burglaries, robberies

Police said one person is in custody as SWAT negotiates with one to two other suspects barricaded inside a west-side home after a string of car thefts this morning.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police said one person is in custody and SWAT actively works to apprehend one to two others barricaded inside a home on the west side after a string of car thefts on Thursday morning.

SAPD said the crime spree began at around 6 a.m. when officers received reports of three suspects breaking into cars on the west side. Officials said the suspects are believed to be connected to at least 12 to 13 different burglary, aggravated robbery and stolen vehicle calls just on Thursday as well as other robberies from earlier in the week.

In one incident, police said the owner of a vehicle came out to confront the suspects. That’s when one of them pulled a gun on the car owner.

According to SAPD, officers made their way to a home on the 1200 block of Westlyn Drive, a location well known for receiving several calls for disturbances and reports of stolen vehicles.

Police said upon arrival, the suspects were spotted in a stolen vehicle before they bailed and ran into the home where they barricaded, prompting a response from SWAT.

One suspect has been apprehended and one if not two others are expected to be inside the house, police said. Those suspects are believed to range from ages 18-26.

Witnesses inside, who police say came out on their own, have been detained for questioning. Officials said they believe there to be no danger to the area.

This is an active scene as SWAT works to get the remaining suspect(s) out of the home.

Police also said one person fled from the location before being tracked down by officers and taken into custody nearby. It is unclear at this time, according to police, if the individual is one of the three suspects or possibly a fourth.

SAPD said information in regards to this incident is preliminary at this time and could be subject to change.

This is a developing story.
