SAN ANTONIO — Police are investigating a shootout that broke out in a south-San Antonio wireless store and caused bullets to pierce the walls separating it from a neighboring gym, driving customers there to drop to the floor.
No one is believed to have been hurt in the gunfight, which unfolded around 6:34 p.m. Tuesday at a shopping center at Pleasanton Road and West Southcross Boulevard. Authorities are trying to determine if it was a robbery attempt or targeted attack.
According to SAPD Sgt. Gary Mucho, at least one person was armed when a group of two men and two women entered the Total Wireless store. The armed suspect started shooting at the clerk, who police say had their own gun and stared firing back several times.
There were between 10 and 15 gym-goers at a next-door business, where police say a class was being held when the shooting began. They hit the floor as two or three rounds flew through the walls.
The suspects managed to leave the area and haven’t been identified. But one parent who was at the scene said she’s fed up with the violence.
“You’ve got kids out here doing a good thing, then you’ve got a lot of gangbanging activity on the south side, so it makes it hard,” the mother said.
Investigators say the clerk who returned fire isn’t facing any charges. Local hospitals, meanwhile, have been notified to alert police in case someone shows up with gunshot wounds.
