SAPD Chief William McManus shares new details in recent Stone Oak shooting of 7 officers

The police officers were shot when responding to a suicide in progress call in the Sonterra Heights Apartments.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police Chief William McManus shared new details about the recent shooting in Stone Oak where seven officers were hit at a district 10 community meeting this week.

McManus cleared the air on what happened leading up to when Brandon Poulos started to shoot at officers.

McManus says the shooting started off as a suicide in progress call at the Sonterra Heights apartments on the Northwest Side.

McManus says when officers approached Poulos he was at different locations around the complex.

McManus noted at one point where Poulos was in a breezeway and then hiding underneath a car.

The chief says one officer was shot first, then the others were hit trying to get that officer out of danger.

“He then fired a round of buckshot at them and that buckshot hit I three or four of them in the face and the body. After that, I believe two more [were] shot,” said McManus.

McManus says no SWAT trucks were there yet to protect the officers trying to take cover.

According to the medical examiner, Poulos was shot and killed by police.

One officer is still recovering in the hospital.

On Wednesday, McManus and District 8 councilmember Manny Pelaez will join together for a Q&A discussion.

It’ll take place from 9 to 10:30 at the Hardberger Park Urban Ecology Center on Northwest Military Highway.

This event is free and open for anyone wanting to attend.
