San Antonio police are inviting women to a free event offering hands-on training and insight into a career in law enforcement.
SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Police Department is working to recruit more women into law enforcement through an upcoming event designed to inform, inspire and break down barriers.
SAPD will host its “Women in Policing” event on March 28 at the department’s training academy, giving attendees a firsthand look at what it takes to become an officer.
The free event will focus on fitness, preparedness and the police academy experience, including a chance to try out parts of the department’s obstacle course.
Organizers say the goal is to give women across San Antonio an opportunity to learn directly from female officers working in different roles, ranks and specialized units.
“It’s a challenge,” one officer said of the training course. “It’s something good to be able to measure yourself on.”
SAPD leaders say increasing the number of women on the force is important, especially when responding to sensitive cases like family violence and sexual assault, where victims may feel more comfortable speaking with a female officer.
“To be another female there brought them a little bit more safety and security,” one officer said. “It makes me feel good knowing you’re there to support somebody else.”
The department says the event is also about building the next generation of officers by showing what a career in policing can offer.
According to the city, starting pay for cadets is about $56,000 a year, with officers earning between $60,000 and $80,000 after graduating the academy.
SAPD encourages attendees to wear workout gear and be ready to participate in hands-on activities.
Organizers say the event is open to anyone curious about law enforcement, even those just exploring the idea.
“Everybody is welcome. Come out, have fun… even if you’re just a little bit curious,” an officer said.
The event is free and open to the public.
