SAPD identifies officer who shot knife-wielding 16-year-old

Police responded to the south side Monday morning, where the teen allegedly “aggressively” approached them with a knife.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio police officer who shot a teenager as he allegedly came at police with a knife in hand earlier this week has been identified as Jeffrey Pratt, who has been with the force for six years.

Pratt remains on administrative duty pending internal investigations into the Monday incident, per San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) protocol.

On Monday morning, Pratt and other officers responded to a home in the 300 block of West Dickson in south San Antonio after receiving a call that a 16-year-old was “attempting to hurt himself with a knife,” according to an incident report.

“Soon after, the juvenile exited the home holding two knives, and aggressively approached the officers,” the report states.

The teenager allegedly threw a knife at police, at which point an officer unsuccessfully deployed a Taser. Police say the 16-year-old “continued to run at him with a knife in his hand,” at which point Pratt shot and struck him in the thigh and shoulder.

Authorities say the teenager, who hasn’t been identified, was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. No officers were hurt.

This was the 12th shooting involving San Antonio police in 2025 so far. Per SAPD policy, body camera video of the incident isn’t expected to be released since the police shooting involved a juvenile.
