SAPD: Improper turn leads to crash, baby injured; intoxicated driver faces charges

The baby sustained serious bodily injuries, according to police.

SAN ANTONIO — A three-month-old baby was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after a major crash involving an intoxicated driver, according to police.

A black Volkswagen was driving westbound on Ingram Road just after midnight Saturday. The baby was reportedly in a rear-facing car seat in the Volkswagen. Another child, age unknown, was also in the Volkswagen.

The Volkswagen allegedly made an improper left turn into an apartment complex in the 10100 block of Ingram. Two pickup trucks were traveling behind the Volkswagen at a high rate of speed in the same direction. One truck was black, the other was white.

During the improper turn, police say the black truck hit the rear of the Volkswagen, redirecting it into the eastbound lanes. Police say the driver of the black truck stopped, got into the white truck, and fled the scene without rendering aid.

The baby in the Volkswagen sustained serious bodily injury and was taken to the hospital. The baby’s condition as of Saturday morning is unclear.

The driver of the black truck, a 21-year-old man who got out, was located shortly after and is being charged with collision involving serious bodily injury.

The driver of the Volkswagen was evaluated and showed signs of being intoxicated. With two children in the vehicle, the driver is facing two charges of driving intoxicated with a child under 15 years old. The driver and other child were not injured.
