SAPD: Intoxicated driver ignores stop sign; causes fatal accident on west side

A Nissan was driving south on 24th Street just after 12:30 a.m. As the Nissan approached the intersection, a Chevrolet disregarded a stop sign and hit the Nissan.

SAN ANTONIO — A man is now dead after an intoxicated driver ran a stop sign, according to police.

Police say a Nissan Sentra was driving south on 24th Street just after 12:30 a.m. Saturday. As the Nissan approached the intersection of 24th Street and West Travis Street, police say a Chevrolet Silverado disregarded a stop sign and hit the Nissan.

The passenger of the Nissan, a 23-year-old man, was ejected from the vehicle. The driver of the Nissan fled on foot and did not help the victim.

The driver of the Silverado also fled the scene on foot. He was detained shortly after a few blocks away from the crash site. He was found to be intoxicated by police and was arrested. He was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The 23-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. 

The driver of the Silverado will be charged with intoxication manslaughter and collision involving death.

When located, the driver of the Nissan will be charged with collision involving death.
