SAPD looking into upgrading electronic citation devices

“We have to replace it,” one official said. “The devices we are currently using are at our end of life. We need to invest in some new equipment.”

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police is looking at revamping its technology on handing out tickets. E-citations are not new, but SAPD says the hardware the department has right now is at its end of life.

Assistant Police Chief Robert Blanton spoke about the request at Tuesday’s Public Safety Committee.

“We have to replace it,” he said. “The devices we are currently using are at our end of life. We need to invest in some new equipment.”

Since 2013, SAPD’s traffic unit started using electronic citation. It is all done with device.

“The driver’s license has all your demographic data, the registration sticker has data related to the car,” he said. “All of that can be captured by the device.”

He then explained the citation is printed and handed to the driver. The e-citation also transfers all the data to municipal court. SAPD said the technology is efficient.

“That technology allows more officers to quickly issue that citation to the driver,” he said. “It speeds up the process of getting them off the roadway and back in their car.”

According to latest statistics, in 2023, SAPD issued just shy of 100,000 traffic citations, like for speeding, or not having a license. Recently, the department has been field testing new devices, that are more advanced. It comes at a cost of more than $373,000.

SAPD is looking at vendors and plans to present it to city council in March. It is also looking at the possibility of using this same technology for its patrol officers.
