SAPD: Man caught on video killing kitten turns himself in to police

San Antonio authorities say 31-year-old Ryan Berlanga, who has been arrested previously, now faces a charge of animal cruelty.

SAN ANTONIO — A man who San Antonio police say was seen on video strangling and killing a kitten at an apartment complex earlier this month turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday.

Ryan Berlanga, 31, now faces a charge of animal cruelty. Police say he has a criminal history that includes charges of assault, harassment and theft, but couldn’t provide information about why he allegedly decided to kill a young cat on Nov. 9.

“If you see something, say something,” said SAPD Sgt. Ariel Hernandez, a public information supervisor with the department, adding that community members helped identify Berlanga before a warrant for his arrest was issued.

Police initially shared video on Nov. 11 of a man who officials said chased after and killed the kitten in an outdoor apartment stairwell. The organization Alley Cat Allies had offered a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the suspect’s conviction.
