San Antonio police said a 33-year-old man was hospitalized in critical condition after a shooting at West End Park.
SAN ANTONIO — A man was critically injured in a shooting just west of downtown San Antonio on Wednesday after police said an ongoing dispute between two groups escalated.
According to the San Antonio Police Department, officers were called around 2:30 p.m. for reports of a shooting-in-progress at West End Park near Menchaca Street and North Hamilton Avenue.
Investigators said the incident appears to be connected to a fight reported in the same area the day before.
Police said the groups involved returned to the park Wednesday wanting to “fight it out” and gunfire broke out. Witnesses told officers that both parties fired at each other, though investigators are still working to determine who shot first.
According to police, a 33-year-old man was shot once in the abdomen. Officers believe a family member may have transported him from the park to the 900 block of West Martin Street, near where the University Health Robert B. Green campus is located.
The man was hospitalized in critical condition, according to SAPD.
Officials said witnesses reported seeing a handgun dumped from a vehicle that was transporting the victim to the second location. Investigators recovered the weapon and are working to determine whether it is connected to the shooting.
Officers also received reports of several people running from the scene on foot, while others fled in vehicles. Police said there are currently no suspect descriptions and the investigation remains ongoing.
SAPD emphasized that all information is preliminary and subject to change as detectives continue gathering details.
This is a developing story.
