SAN ANTONIO — A man was shot and killed by police after he tried to hit an officer with his car while the officer was trying to execute an arrest warrant on Saturday, according to SAPD.
San Antonio Police responded to a home on Cheviot Heights on the northwest side of town around 12:45 a.m. Sunday to execute a warrant. SAPD Chief William McManus said the ordeal began Saturday afternoon.
The suspect, a 42-year-old man, allegedly hit a woman with his car sometime Saturday afternoon in the 8600 block of Cheviot Heights.
A witness at the scene told officers the 51-year-old victim was walking on the sidewalk when a driver in a white BMW sport utility vehicle pulled out of the driveway of a nearby home, traveled onto the sidewalk, and struck the victim.
Police determined the suspect intentionally struck the victim with the vehicle. The driver of the white BMW fled the scene.
“She’s undergoing several surgeries, she’s still in critical condition,” McManus said.
Officers secured a warrant for the suspect’s arrest. When they arrived at the home to take him into custody, he tried to reverse between the two police vehicles, striking an SAPD officer.
“The other officer that was with him fired to stop him, struck him and he’s deceased,” McManus said.
He was hit once in the chest. Officers attempted life-saving measures, but EMS arrived and pronounced the man dead at the scene.
The officer who shot the suspect has about four years on the force. This is the eighth shooting involving SAPD this year, and the fourth to be deadly.
The officer that was hit was taken to the hospital to get checked out, and a second officer was treated for injuries at the scene. Nobody else was injured during the incident.
