SAPD: ‘Minor’ argument at Medical Center Whataburger leads to shooting early Sunday; suspect has now been arrested

26-year-old Antonio Valentin Corralez has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

SAN ANTONIO — A man has been arrested after a shooting at a Whataburger in the Medical Center area early Sunday morning.

Officers responded to the 8000 block of Fredericksburg Road around 5:15 a.m. for reports of an aggravated assault.

Arriving officers found a 32-year-old man with a gunshot wound.

According to an arrest affidavit, it was found that three people walked to the Whataburger together. Police say the three people were the victim, 26-year-old Antonio Valentin Corralez and their mutual friend. Police say the victim and Corralez had known each other for four years.

The victim said he and Corralez ordered food. The victim then asked Corralez why he didn’t order their friend food, which police say made Corralez angry. This started an argument between the two, leading the victim to call Corralez “stupid.”

Corralez told the victim if he called him stupid again, he would “blow his brains out,” something the victim said Corralez has said multiple times in the past.

The argument continued, and the victim called Corralez stupid again. That’s when police say Corralez reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a silver handgun and shot the victim in the left shoulder. The victim ran to the kitchen to get away from Corralez, who fled from the location.

Police watched surveillance footage which showed Corralez and the victim having a “minor argument” followed by Corralez shooting the victim in the left arm. The video also shows Corralez picking up the shell casing and putting it in his pocket. The video then showed the friend trying to get Corralez to leave, which resulted in a short fight between the two before they left the Whataburger.

Corralez was identified in a photo lineup by the victim, according to the affidavit. He was arrested Thursday and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
