SAN ANTONIO — A newborn baby was found under a drainage ditch with their umbilical cord attached, according to police.
Around 3:40 p.m., police were called to the area of 1900 Austin Highway. Police say they found a man carrying a baby with its umbilical cord still attached.
According to their investigation, a woman experiencing homelessness had the baby in a wooded area under a drainage ditch. Police say the woman then left the baby there, walked away and went up to a nearby bar area to “have a cigarette.”
A man then walked up and found the baby, alerting nearby construction workers.
Police say the baby is okay, and both the mother and baby are at a local hospital. Police are waiting to speak to both parties.
Information is limited at this time. The gender of the baby is unclear, as is if the man or woman knew each other. It’s also unclear if the mother faces any charges at this point.
