Police say the suspects are also accused of carjacking a woman moments before officers spotted the suspects driving the stolen truck.
A routine morning turned into chaos at the intersection of Blanco Road and Jackson Keller Road when two suspects in a stolen vehicle, fleeing from police, collided with an unsuspecting motorist, leaving one person critically injured.
The incident happened on Thursday when police said 18-year-old Moses Perez and 18-year-old Daniel Gunalda carjacked a 42-year-old man driving a Chevy Silverado 2500 at gunpoint near San Angelo Blvd.
The vehicle theft triggered an immediate police response, with marked patrol units pursuing the suspects as they sped north on Blanco Road, according to a preliminary police report.
At approximately 5:39 a.m., police said the stolen Silverado, traveling at a dangerously high speed, ran a red light at the intersection of Blanco Road and Jackson Keller Road.
That’s when the suspects crashed into Ford F-150 on the driver’s side, pushing it into a nearby parking lot. The force of the impact left the driver of the F-150 with life-threatening injuries. Emergency responders quickly arrived on the scene, transporting the victim to a nearby hospital, where they remain in critical but stable condition.
Following the crash, Perez and Gunalda attempted to flee the scene on foot, according to police. But they didn’t get far as officers swiftly apprehended both suspects.
Perez was booked for Aggravated Robbery, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Failure to Stop and Render Aid causing Serious Bodily Injury, Evading Arrest in a Vehicle, and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon.
Gunalda faces charges of Aggravated Robbery, Evading Arrest or Detention, and Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon.
