SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio police officer who threatened to shoot a colleague while they were off-duty last September was suspended for 10 days in January, records show.
According to SAPD disciplinary records, police responded to the 7200 block of Potranco Road on Sept. 1, 2024, after receiving reports of a “disturbance involving three off-duty officers,” including John E. Carroll.
Records say body-worn camera footage from the responding officers showed Carroll threatening to shoot one of the other off-duty officers when he said: “If you keep coming towards me with [redacted] in my arms, I am going to take that as a threat and I will shoot you.”
One of the off-duty officers involved in the altercation referred to Carroll’s behavior as “aggressive,” saying they “realized that there was no way (to) calm Officer Carroll down and any further communication was only going to cause further escalation,” records say. That officer went on to report that Carroll continued to get louder and began to yell derogatory slurs towards him.
Disciplinary records say a witness to the altercation corroborated that those remarks were made by Carroll, based on the description provided to responding officers. Documents show his suspension began on Jan. 19 and ended Jan. 28.
Carroll, who has been with SAPD since 2019, was also involved in a shooting back in October 2023 where he chased and killed a man who police say was armed at the time.
