Officials say the officer shoved the suspect against a vehicle when taking them into custody for allegedly running over a deputy.
SAN ANTONIO — A San Antonio police officer who helped arrest a man wanted for running over a Bexar County deputy last year was put on suspension this month.
The suspension is related to the October arrest of Adrian Arellano nearly two weeks after he allegedly hit the deputy working traffic at St. Matthews Catholic School on Wurzbach Road.
Officer Anthony Espinosa was suspended for five days last week for what the city deemed excessive force when he helped arrest Arellano.
The arrest happened around 3 a.m. on October 14 on San Pedro and Thames.
Based on body camera footage, Arellano was instructed to step out of the car and walk backwards until he reached a patrol vehicle. Video shows Arellano followed these instructions, but Officer Espinosa can be seen shoving him against the car, causing Arellano to lose balance.
A struggle followed, with Arellano saying he was not resisting.
This arrest came nearly two weeks after Arellano was wanted for a hit and run involving Bexar County Deputy Victor Villalon, who was working off duty.
After being hit, he rolled off the car, breaking his foot and injuring his head.
As for Arellano, he still faces charges of collision involving serious bodily injury and aggravated assault against a public servant.
Since the suspension, Espinosa has since returned back to work.
