SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Police department has released body camera video of where a man was shot by police after taking an officer’s weapon.
Around 12 p.m. on May 9, an officer responded to the 2600 block of North 1604 West after receiving reports of a theft happening at a restaurant.
Upon arrival, the officer was told the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Sheldon Butts, ran into a wooded area with stolen kitchen sheers.
When the officer found Butts and asked for information, the video shows him asking the officer for his gun so he could shoot himself. The officer then asked butts to sit down so they could talk.
But the suspect can be seen refusing to sit down before lunging towards the officer.
The officer deployed his pepper spray but it ended up being ineffective as Butts was still able to reach for the officer’s weapon.
The officer’s body camera fell to the ground as the two tussled before two shots can be heard coming from the officer’s gun, striking Butts.
Butts was treated by EMS and later arrested on charges of assault and bodily injury of a peace officer and taking a weapon from a peace officer.
