SAPD: Security officer shoots armed man during disturbance at south-side Whataburger

Police said a man who was asked to leave during a disturbance at the location later returned with another suspect to confront the security officer.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police said a disturbance at a south-side Whataburger early Saturday morning ended in gunfire after a security officer shot a man who pulled a gun on him in the parking lot.

According to SAPD, officers were dispatched around 2:26 a.m. to the Whataburger located on the 4700 block of I-35 South, for reports of a shooting.

Investigators said a disturbance occurred at the location between a man and the on-site security officer, during which the suspect was instructed to leave the premises. Before leaving, police said the man reportedly made verbal threats toward the guard.

Officials said the man later returned to the location with another individual, identified as a 46-year-old man. The two confronted the security officer in the parking lot and the 46-year-old pulled out a handgun and fired multiple shots at him, according to investigators.

The security officer returned fire, hitting the armed man several times. Both suspects then fled the scene.

Officers later found the 46-year-old suspect a short distance away and took him into custody without incident, police said. He was taken to a hospital where he remains in stable condition.

Police said the first suspect involved in the confrontation has not been located at this time.

The 32-year-old security officer was not injured during the exchange.

Investigators said the suspect who was taken into custody faces a charge of assault on a security officer with a deadly weapon.

This is a developing story.
