SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police say several people have been detained for questioning after they were seen by witnesses “exiting an 18-wheeler and running into an open field” on the southwest side Tuesday evening.
Officers with the San Antonio Police Department responded to the area of Plumnear and Quintana around 6 p.m. Homeland Security personnel eventually arrived to the scene to assist, but it’s unclear as of now if law enforcement are dealing with a possible smuggling situation.
Between five and seven people had been found as of 7:30 p.m., including those believed to have been driving the tractor-trailer.
“As they were running, witnesses stated they began to enter different vehicles in an attempt to get away,” said Emily Garvin, a spokesperson for SAPD. “Right now we have multiple people detained, multiple vehicles detained, and we are working closely with Homeland Security.”
Various SAPD units could be seen in the area and a police helicopter was searching overhead.
She added that information was preliminary and could change as the investigation continues, but there had been no reported injuries or fatalities in connection with the incident.
Authorities at this point don’t believe that children are involved.
