Chief William McManus said the unidentified suspect ran from police into a nearby drainage ditch and pointed a handgun at an officer.
SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Police were at the scene of a reported shooting involving an officer Tuesday afternoon on the city’s north-side where SAFD officials confirmed a suspect is dead.
Chief William McManus said police attempted a pedestrian stop on the 8500 block of Jones Maltsberger Road and East Rector near North Star Mall when the suspect, likely in his early 30s, ran from officers down into a nearby drainage ditch.
Police pursued the suspect who allegedly pointed a semi automatic handgun at an officer. McManus says he continued to flee from police and again pointed his weapon at the officer.
The Chief says the suspect appeared to then shoot at the officer who ultimately returned fire, striking the suspect and killing him.
The officer, who McManus said has about 40 years of service, was not injured.
McManus says this information is preliminary and could change as an investigation into the shooting continues.
This is the 20th shooting involving an officer this year.
