SAN ANTONIO — A shooting on the city’s north side Saturday afternoon was the result of a drug deal gone wrong, according to the San Antonio Police Department. Now, officers are searching for a teen suspect who fled the scene in a white SUV.
The shooting happened around 3:30 p.m. on Cherry Ridge Drive, near Vance Jackson Road. Police said a teenage boy invited another teen to his home, where the two met in the backyard. At some point, police say a drug deal between them escalated into gunfire.
“We had one juvenile male call his juvenile friend over for a drug deal. Apparently, something went bad between them, and one shot at the other three or four times,” said SAPD Sgt. Elias Tobias.
No injuries were reported, but police say bullets struck the victim’s home, and a neighboring house.
After the gunfire, the victim ran inside and told his grandmother, who had just arrived back to the home, what happened, Tobias said.
Police say the teen then ran back outside and reportedly started fighting with the shooter.
The grandmother called police and also went outside, where she saw the suspect flee the scene in a white crossover SUV.
Crime scene officers, along with homicide and robbery detectives, are actively investigating.
Lydia McConnell, who lives nearby, said the incident was a shock in what she described as a typically quiet neighborhood.
“It’s definitely really scary,” McConnell said. “Especially having a young child and being pregnant — to hear that something like this happened in what I thought was a safe neighborhood.”
Police said the teen suspect could face charges ranging from assault with a deadly weapon to attempted murder.
