SAPD: Two dead, six hurt in Historic Market Square shooting on penultimate night of Fiesta

Details are few as of now about the incident, which unfolded near where Fiesta Flambeau was ending.

SAN ANTONIO — Fiesta celebration at Historic Market Square was interrupted by deadly gunfire late Saturday night when two young men started shooting at each other and were eventually killed, San Antonio police officials say.

It’s unclear how exactly they died or what led up to the shooting, but Police Chief William McManus said officers intervened when the shots rang out in the area of South Santa Rosa and Dolorosa. Six other bystanders were hurt, two of them taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

“We have a very busy crime scene here,” McManus said around 1:30 a.m. “We’re trying to sort everything out.”

It’s unknown what time the shots rang out, but the police chief said multiple officers fired their weapons during the incident.

“We had two officers return fire, and he was just pronounced dead,” McManus said

Two guns were recovered by police at the scene.

None of the victims have been identified following the shooting, which unfolded at a popular part of town that’s typically crowded during the Fiesta season—and just a few blocks south of where Fiesta Flambeau wrapped up Saturday night.

McManus said the investigation remains ongoing.

This is a developing story.
