SAPD: Woman hospitalized after being struck by train on east side

A 26-year-old woman was taken to a hospital after being hit by a train early Sunday morning near Oran Street, according to San Antonio police.

SAN ANTONIO — A woman was hospitalized after being struck by a train early Sunday morning on the east side of San Antonio.

According to police, the incident happened around 12:07 a.m. in the 100 block of Oran Avenue.

Investigators said the train’s conductor saw a 26-year-old woman walk onto the tracks and stand facing the oncoming train with her arms extended. As the train approached, the conductor initially believed the woman would move out of the way, police say.

Police said the woman then turned away from the train, still with her arms extended, prompting the conductor to believe she may have been attempting to harm herself. The conductor tried to stop the train but was unable to do so in time.

The woman was struck by the train, which was traveling at an estimated speed of less than 20 miles per hour, and fell beneath it, according to authorities.

She suffered apparent injuries and was transported to a local hospital. Her condition has not been released.

The incident remains under investigation, and details are subject to change.
