Business owners say they’ve lost a lot of their income because of detours surrounding the project.
SAN ANTONIO — Nobody likes construction or road work, especially when it impacts their daily life. One short piece of road in Boerne is causing many businesses to lose out on a lot of money.
The road is only closed in one direction. It is open one way going toward the highway. But for those working in the area or using the businesses along the street, they say it’s a major headache for those using the highway for even just trying to get around the corner to get lunch.
Frank Hakspiel, the owner Bar 301 told KENS 5, “I think they’re really going to put some people out of business. And so this is not the first time that they do something like this.”
Hakspiel also owns Fralo’s Art of Pizza next door. He says the traffic trouble has made him lose a lot of money on both businesses.
“Very upsetting to some of the customers. Some understand, some really don’t. You know, they continue to to support us,” Hakspiel said.
When you exit off of I-10 at Boerne Stage Road, instead of turning right into the bar or any business along the frontage road, you have to go all of the way to Boerne Stage Road, then loop around to the other side of the frontage road.
So what is the reason for all of this? Anne Hayden, the SAWS director of communication said, “SAWS installing a 36 inch water main that will provide water to this rapidly growing area in San Antonio.”
But many say the detours aren’t very well marked.
Santiago Carrera, the owner Mae Dunne told said, “Many of our customers think we’re closed. Then that detour does not have, you know, good instructions on how to get here.”
Joshua Grimes from Octane Personal Training said, “A lot of the clients tell me that they have no idea how to get in the parking lot, which exit is going to be opened for them. What traffic’s going to look like.”
SAWS says it could take about another six weeks to finish the project.
“We’re going to wrap it up as soon as we can. But this project is really important for those of us who are moving to that part of town or who want to move to that part of town. You need water,” said Hayden.
