Scottie Scheffler, Cooper Flagg nominated for ESPYs in multiple categories

See if the two Texas athletes can bring home some hardware from the annual award show.

DALLAS — It’s that time of the year when the sports calendar gets thin and a moment of reflection is necessary — and it’s not a coincidence that it coincides with the annual ESPY Awards show hosted by ESPN.

The ESPYs, short for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly, are up for grabs for some of the world’s top athletes across numerous categories over the last year. From the best NFL player to the best record-breaking performance across all sports.

For the 2025 edition of the award show, two Texas-based athletes have received nominations for their achievements: World No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler and the Dallas Mavericks’ No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg.

Scheffler, a native North Texan who continues to prove time and time again that he is among the all-time elite in his chosen sport, is up for Best Golfer. He’s up against 2025 Masters Champion Rory McIlroy and the LPGA’s Nelly Korda and Maja Stark.

Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg earned two nominations. He’s up for Best College Athlete in Men’s Sports, alongside Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter, and Best Breakthrough Athlete, recognizing his standout season at Duke.

The ESPYS, hosted by comedian Shane Gillis, will air at 7 p.m. Wednesday on WFAA (ABC).
