SAN ANTONIO — One of San Antonio’s most well-known captains is taking a break. No, we’re not talking about Tim Duncan.
Jolly Jack, the 10-foot-tall captain who has stood watch by Sea Island Shrimp House’s original north-side location since 1965, is stepping down from his post for about eight weeks, the seafood chain says. The reason: He’s getting a much-needed facelift.
“After braving decades of Texas heat, rainstorms and generations of photo ops, Jolly Jack needs some repairs,” Sea Island said in a press release. “This restoration will return him to his original 1965 appearance, just in time for Sea Island Shrimp House’s 60th anniversary year.”
San Antonio-based manufacturer Christopher Stuart Cast Stone will lead the restoration effort while also reinforcing the restaurant mascot with fiberglass to ensure “he remains seaworthy for years to come.” The project is expected to take about eight weeks; Sea Island says fans can get behind-the-scenes looks at his facelift on social media.
Family-owned Sea Island has grown from that one location to seven total restaurants in the Alamo City and New Braunfels.
