Security ensured by authorities for SA events in wake of recent terror attack

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and the San Antonio FBI office are recognizing the increased concern for safety at public events.

SAN ANTONIO — In light of the terror attack on New Year’s Day on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, security and safety come into question for large-scale events planned this year in San Antonio.

Multiple cities across the nation have been on high alert in light of the tragedies starting off the year.

The Alamo City has the MLK Day March, the Rodeo and the Final Four all coming up.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office and the San Antonio FBI office are recognizing the increased concern for safety at public events.

The FBI says it doesn’t have information indicating a local threat in relation to what happened in New Orleans or Las Vegas, but they want to reiterate that our safety is their top priority.

Multiple events in the coming months are expected to bring hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world to San Antonio, such as Fiesta and the NCAA Final Four.

According to the agency, they have been working closely with SAPD, the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, Texas DPS and federal law enforcement partners for months to prepare for upcoming events in our communities. Both BCSO and the FBI are ensuring that comprehensive safety measures are in place to protect eventgoers and are prepared to respond to any potential threats.

BCSO followed up with its own response, saying:

As we approach Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the SA Rodeo, and other events, our deputies, in partnership with local and federal authorities, remain committed to ensuring a secure and safe environment for all.”

For extra precaution, the FBI advises contacting them or local law enforcement agencies if you have information about a potential threat. To reach them, you can call the San Antonio FBI Field Office at 210-225-6741 or 1-800-CALL-FBI. You can also send a tip at TIPS.FBI.GOV.

KENS 5 is also working to get a statement from SAPD. We’ll keep you updated as soon as we receive more information.

This comes after the scary events in New Orleans and Las Vegas on New Year's Day.
