Frisco police confirmed they responded to reports of a stabbing outside the Frisco Islamic Center, officials said.
FRISCO, Texas — A man attacked a security guard with a machete outside the Islamic Center of Frisco Saturday night, Frisco police confirmed.
According to the Frisco Police Department, 26-year-old Malik Davis entered the Islamic Center of Frisco, located at 11137 Frisco Street, on Saturday and attacked a uniformed security guard with a machete.
Police said the victim was praying when Davis attacked him from behind, hitting the victim multiple times. The guard suffered large lacerations to his head and hands, according to Frisco PD.
Police say Davis took the guard’s gun during the struggle, but ditched the firearm before confronting officers. The weapon was later recovered.
Officers responded around 10:57 p.m. to the mosque and quickly detained Davis and rendered aid to the victim. Police booked Davis into the Frisco Holding Facility, where he was charged with aggravated assault against a security officer and theft of a firearm. Frisco PD said he was later booked into the Collin County jail, where he is being held on a $60,000 bond.
FPD said Frisco Fire took the victim to a local hospital, where he was treated and released.
In a statement Monday, the Frisco Police Department saidx the investigation into the attack is ongoing, but “nothing” suggests that the stabbing was a hate crime. Police said Davis was a regular attendee at the mosque for the last several months.
In a statement released Sunday, the Islamic Center of Frisco said the Masjid was closed until further notice due to a security issue. The center asked everyone to stay away from the site to ensure everyone’s safety and allow police to manage the area, the statement reads.
In a letter to the community, the president of the Islamic Center of Frisco said the stabbing appears to be an isolated incident, and they believe there is no ongoing threat to the community.
Regular activities resumed on Sunday.
