Neighbors say they heard the boy’s bike scraping under the truck that fatally struck him on Thanksgiving morning.
HOUSTON, Texas — A woman tied a small remembrance to a utility pole Friday near the spot where a 7-year-old boy was killed on Thanksgiving morning.
“Experiencing something like that and seeing his little face, it was just hard,” neighbor Ebony Brooks said.
Brooks called 911 after her daughter, August Moore, heard the crash and saw an older pickup truck driver in distress.
“I was just sitting outside and then I heard the bike scraping under the car,” Moore said. “He stopped to see what was under the car, and I don’t think he realized he hit the kid. Then he looked down the street, saw the kid and started screaming, ‘Help! Somebody help, please!’”
Brooks said the driver was overwhelmed.
“He was frantic and kept saying, ‘I didn’t see him, I didn’t see him. I hit a kid — please, somebody help him, somebody call 911,’” she said.
Houston police said the driver stayed at the scene and cooperated with investigators. EMS pronounced the boy dead at the scene.
“They checked him, and when they pulled that sheet out… that was the hardest part,” Brooks said. “Because you’re like, ‘This is somebody’s baby.’”
Brooks told us she didn’t recognize the boy but believes he may have lived elsewhere in the neighborhood.
As of Friday, police have not released any updates on potential charges. Investigators said early on that speeding did not appear to be a factor.
