Seguin police warn of parking lot donation scam targeting shoppers

Seguin police are warning residents about a scam in local business parking lots where suspects allegedly alter electronic donation amounts to steal larger sums.

SEGUIN, Texas — The Seguin Police Department is alerting the community to a reported scam targeting shoppers in local business parking lots.

According to police, several people have reported being approached by a group of young men asking for donations near businesses, including the Walmart and H-E-B areas.

Investigators say victims are initially asked to make a small electronic donation, sometimes as little as $1. But during the transaction, the amount is allegedly changed to reflect a much larger charge, such as $100.

Multiple community members have reported being scammed in this way.

Police are urging residents to use caution if approached for donations in parking lots. Officials recommend verifying charitable organizations before making electronic payments and carefully reviewing the total amount before completing any transaction.

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim or who has information about the incidents is asked to contact the Seguin Police Department at (830) 379-2123.

Authorities are encouraging residents to spread awareness to help prevent others from falling victim.
